In 1912, three ships travelled to what was then known as Pond's Inlet looking for gold. The Algerine sank near Erik Harbour just east of present day Pond Inlet not long after arriving in the area; the Neptune, spent little time here and finding no gold returned home that year along with the crew of the Algerine; while the Minnie Maud, captained by Joseph Bernier, spent the winter in Albert Harbour, returning south in 1913 also without any gold.
Cruise of the Minnie Maud
When no gold was found in the area, trading with the Inuit was taken up as an alternate means of making money.
